Acupuncture for Women’s Health

Acupuncture continues to gain popularity because of its ability to treat a wide and varied range of ailments while restoring calm and reducing stress. Women are encouraged to listen to both their bodies and their feelings to uncover the vast healing potential within themselves. Education is always supportive of your unique situation, and seeks to help you adopt attitudes and lifestyle changes conducive to optimal health.

Acupuncture has been used to treat a wide variety of general health concerns including:

  • Fatigue/ Low Energy
  • PMS
  • Painful Menstruation
  • Endometriosis
  • Infertility
  • Depression
  • Anxiety &/or Panic Attacks
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Insomnia
  • Headaches
  • Neck and Shoulder Tension
  • Back Pain
  • Digestive Issues

Treatment Duration

I generally recommend treatment once a week for 6 to 12 weeks depending on how severe the condition is and how long it has been in place. Most patients report changes with 4-8 treatments. Some conditions, like severe joint pain, may require treatment twice a week initially. Some conditions resolve themselves entirely after four treatments.

I asses your situation at an initial consultation, and suggest a treatment protocol that will be appropriate to your concerns. Allowing appropriate time for acupuncture to reach the root of your symptoms is important. In addition, we take time to discuss your overall health and any other concerns you may have in addition to your main complaint. People often find that the support of lifestyle changes and acupuncture improves their overall health in ways they had not expected.

Enhancing Fertility

Repeated negative pregnancy test can be exhausting, stressful and downright painful. Acupuncture has been used in China for thousands of years to help women get pregnant, and is currently receiving attention around the world for promoting conception. If you are interested in getting pregnant you may want to read this research from the Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York. Research has suggested the benefits of acupuncture include:

  • Increasing blood flow to the uterus and ovaries
  • Regulating the hormones to produce a larger number of follicles
  • Improving the quality and thickness of the uterine lining
  • Reducing stress
  • Strengthening the Immune System
  • Decreasing chance for miscarriage
  • Improving hormone levels including FSH, prolactin, estrogen and progesterone
  • Regulating the menstrual cycle

In addition, if your partner has been diagnosed with low sperm count or motility problems, acupuncture and lifestyle changes may be able to increase sperm count and improve motility.

Treatment duration if you are trying to conceive naturally

I recommend weekly treatments for three months, with complicated situations possibly taking longer. Along with Acupuncture, we will look at ways to increase your fertility naturally through nourishing your body with diet and lifestyle coaching.

If you are considering IUI or IVF, you may want to read this additional research:

In this study patients receiving Assisted Reproductive Therapy were divided into two groups. The first group received an acupuncture treatment 25 minutes before and after embryo transfer. The second group did not receive acupuncture before or after embryo transfer.
In the group that received the acupuncture, 42.5 % became pregnant as opposed to 26.3% of the women who did not receive acupuncture.

By coming for regular acupuncture treatments three months prior to embryo transfer, pregnancy rates can increase up to 60% according to Dr. Lifang LiangO.M.D., Ph. D., L.Ac. in her book “Acupuncture & IVF”

Treatment duration if you are trying to conceive with IVF or IUI

I recommend weekly treatments for three months prior to egg retrieval. Acupuncture immediately following the transfer is recommended if possible. In addition to the benefits listed above, acupuncture can specifically help people going through reproductive assistance by decreasing uterine contractility post IVF embryo and reducing side effects of IVF medicine. I do not use or recommend herbs for women who are going through reproductive assistance. However, coaching will include ways to nourish your body through nutrition and lifestyle factors to assist in maximizing your chances for conceiving.

Whatever path you take, I empathize with the fertility journey and will support you as you travel through it.
